The rumba consists of a simple doundoun part played by one person on three douns, an optional djembe accompaniment, and a series of solo phrases.

In general all phrases are played 4 times, the fourth time is changed to end with a flam and then a call is given. Phrase 1 starts with a bass upbeat. The exact times the phrase is played is given, but in real-life situtions that depends on the particular dance steps.
